COLOR DEPTH - how many colors? |
Similar to the way that screen width will vary on different people’s computers, so will the color. There’s nothing we can do about old monitors that display colors poorly or monitors that are set too bright or too dark or too red or too green. But it’s worth our noting that not all computers are set to display the same number of colors. For example, take a look at the Image A, below... |
It should appear as a rainbow starting and ending with red. There should be a smooth transition from color to color with no banding and no little dots. By contrast, you’ll notice that Image B, below, is not a smooth transition because it is limited to only colors 16 levels of color. |

...or perhaps even this... |
If, on your screen, image A looks anything like image B or image C, then your computer is set to display too small a range of colors. Call me and I’ll help you change it. |
What do we do about site visitors whose computers are set to display too few colors? For the vast majority of your site visitors, this will not be a problem. If you wish, we can design your entire site using only the safest range of colors, which gives the greatest likelihood that things will appear correctly on almost all computers. But you will have to decide if you want to cater to the lowest common denominator, or if you want to take advantage of the richness of color that is available if we design for the majority. I recommend ignoring the few whose systems cannot display the larger number of colors. For the most part, I mention this only so that you will understand why, in very, very rare instances, images on someone else’s computer might not look the same as they appear on yours. |

CHOOSING THE COLORS |
If you have an idea of what colors you might like to use on your site, you can view the spectrum of colors here and then tell me which colors you have chosen. If you want to play around with various color schemes, you could try one of the following web sites. Make your own choices for background color, text color, link text color, and so on. Then write down the numbers and send them to me. (A new browser window will be opened when you click on the links below. When you’re done, just close that new window and you will be returned to this web site..) |
